Back to Earth

Realistically, I always expected us to lose yesterday. With the bunch of players we're stuck with until the summer we can also write off Liverpool, Spurs and Villa away. That leaves four games, three at home, to find the ten points needed to stay up.

With Middlesbrough and the Mackems losing as well it looks like any two from the three North-East clubs to join West Brom. Next Saturday we go to Stoke while Saturday play Man Utd and Boro face Hull, both at home. Three points could see us out of the drop zone. Lose and we're as good as down.

That league table (and the results yesterday) looks bleak.

I wouldn't write off anything just yet. Even a draw against Chelsea would have been brilliant. Things are still much more interesting than they were a few days ago. The main thing at this stage is to be cool, and Shearer's as cool as Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction.

Things could hardly be any less interesting than they were pre-Shearer. He's given us a chance but Ashley's latest bit of knee-jerk populism, however welcome, had better include a bit of serious thinking (and spending) in the summer.

I agree that next Saturday is probably going to be the defining moment of this season... 3 points will be a tremendous boost.. No points and its time to start thinking about playing Blackpool next season.
