The Final Stretch

Derek Llambias's bullish patter about relegation - "It's totally inconceivable. You just couldn't go there" - notwithstanding, the fact remains that Sunday's defeat has left us in deep, deep shit. With eleven matches remaining, we're two points clear of the bottom three with the hardest run-in of all the teams around us, including games against all of the current top five. First up, tomorrow night, is our annual hiding from Manchester United. Three-nil, my brother thinks. Ever the optimist, I reckon we might get one back.

It's all a far cry from the first day of the season.

Michael; the bookies have us 4th favourites for the drop; the Man U gane will be my ninth this season and I have yet to see a really good performance against decent opposition; it all bodes ill for the future; it will require a huge concerted team effort from all concerned to avoid relegation; we need a temporary and experienced manager until the end of the season too... dare I say Venables?

I never thought I'd say this but even Venables might be preferable to our current double act.
That is a depressing thought.

Yesterday, I heard an Irish friend saying "Hughton is a good man.." I left before I could hear whether his sentence ended in "..ager."
I'm getting sick of hearing that "we/the lads/the team ... have to stand up and be men.." - if only they ever did.
Action instead of words would be nice for a change. I think I'll have the first pint 90 minutes before KO, at least I'll be drunk enough by HT to not care anymore. To think that I sacrifice another perfectly fine night.. at least I have the option of turning around and watching the German cup quarter final if it gets too bad..

I’m usually an optimist. I wish I could think of something positive to say, but I can’t.

Me neither, mate.
