Fittingly, after a whole day's pelting by icy flakes, I came across the garden's first snowdrop this morning, a plumped-up beansprout bent double at the waist, pearly-white amid the frosted soil and wind-creased daffodil stems. Elsewhere, the overwintered sweet peas start to climb up narrow sticks, and my miniature Christmas tree shivers in a bubblewrapped pot.
