Yes We Can

On the same day that Sports Direct executives were spotted measuring up signs at St James' Park - and knowing Ashley, you can guarantee they'll be tacky, obtrusive and five sizes too big - the Newcastle United Supporters Trust launched its long-awaited campaign for fan ownership.

Can it work? It does in Spain and Germany. As recently as 2008, we were among the top twenty most profitable clubs in world football. Run properly, there's no reason why we can't be again.

Toon fans, hasta la victoria siempre.

A gallant effort indeed, but sadly doomed to fail.

How on earth would NUFC function with so many owners - and diverse views as to where the club is going?

Having said that anything - literally anything - is better than Ashley.

I think NUFC would function exactly the same as a business with shareholders does. The members elect a president and board to make decisions on their behalf - if you disagree, vote them out at the next election.

One member, one vote.

You're dead right about Ashley. A tenner to the NUST helps to buy him out.

It is possible but it's going to need a hardcore of people with money, business and legal knowledge, and determination.

NUST say they have that in place. I guess we'll find out over the next five weeks or so.
Whatever else, it's great to see people actually trying to do something.
They have my support. And cash.

I've stuck my tenner in as well. The very least we can all do.

Re whether the model is workable, well one member one vote doesn't seem to have done Barcelona (or 95% of the Bundesliga, for that matter) too much harm. I may be speaking too soon but there really does seem to be a groundswell of support for this- and a realisation that it is now or never for the idea of fans having a genuine stake in the club. We could be entering very interesting times...
