Putting On The Brakes

"The tabloids throw up their hands in horror at every other species of crime. They praise the police and demand that the forces of law be given greater powers and that lawbreakers serve longer sentences. But on this issue alone, the tabloids take the opposite position. Richard Brunstrom, the North Wales police chief who is waging war on speeders, is denounced by the Daily Mail as the "mad mullah of the traffic Taliban". The Sun calls him "barmy" and "a politically correct prat". So much for their demands for zero tolerance."

The great George Monbiot on the junk science, hypocrisy and twisted truths of the anti-speed camera lobby.

It was an excellent article, and it drew all the pro-speeding loons out of the woodwork.

Thing is, it's not just the media that downplays driving offences, the courts also treat criminal driving as a misdemeanour.

It also seems coincidental that the anti speed camera nerds also seem to be in the business of anthropogenic global heating denial.

Exactly. Only the other day Bianca Gascoigne got off with a 17-month ban and a £700 fine (paid on her mother's credit card) after smashing into another car while driving twice over the legal alcohol limit. It wasn't her first offence: last year she got done for speeding.
